Short-term LifeGroups create a unique and invaluable space for individuals at our church to find community with minimal barriers. This guide will help you determine your next steps and lead your short-term group with confidence.
What Is a Short-Term LifeGroup?
A short-term LifeGroup meets for a specific timeframe, typically 4-12 weeks, and has a clear start and end date. Groups are built around a message series, curriculum, or topic, creating a natural on-ramp for people who are new, hesitant, or looking for a fresh start in community.
Short-term groups lower the barrier to connection. Because everybody starts together, no one is playing catch-up or breaking into an existing dynamic. Plus, there’s always the option to become an ongoing group.
Getting Started
- Find your focus. As you think about your short-term group, consider what you’ll explore together. You might already have a Bible study or book in mind. You can collaborate with your LifeGroups Coach or Community Pastor for ideas for your short-term group.
- Register your group. When you register your group, be sure to select the “Short-Term LifeGroup” category and enter your planned end date. This ensures your group is both tracked correctly and promoted accurately.
- Promote it simply. Describe your group as being easy and accessible. You can invite people you serve with on the weekends or at the Get Connected Space, as well as individuals you know outside of church.
- Create connection quickly. As your group gets started, find easy ways for people to get to know one another. You might share a meal before diving into content, leverage intentional icebreakers, or ask bold questions that lead to vulnerability.
- Finish strong. Be clear about what happens when your end date arrives, and celebrate the commitment to your group! You might throw a small party to wrap things up and help everyone find their next step in community.
Once you’re done, reach out to your Community Pastor or LifeGroups Coach to share how the group went and talk through next steps. If your group decides to continue meeting, you’ll want to update your group details at my.life.church so it reflects your status as an ongoing group.
Talk with your Community Pastor about resources to help you find your focus, promote your group well, and create connection quickly.
